PROGRAM INFORMATION

Costa Rica is an ideal destination for a faculty-led study abroad program focused on tropical ecology due to its extraordinary biodiversity and strong commitment to conservation. Participants gain firsthand insight into rainforest and coastal ecosystems while exploring sustainability, wildlife preservation, and environmental research through immersive experiences in one of the world’s most biodiverse countries.

This 8-day faculty-led program in San José, Monteverde, La Fortuna, and Cahuita introduces participants to Costa Rica’s diverse natural landscapes and conservation initiatives. Program highlights include a walk through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a visit and lecture at the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, a volcano walk near Arenal, and relaxing arenal hot springs. Along the Caribbean coast, participants will explore Cahuita National Park, and Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, enjoy Cocles and Puerto Viejo beaches, and take part in a night beach patrol observing sea turtles. White water rafting on the Sarapiquí River adds an adventurous element to this immersive ecology-focused experience.

SAA will automatically enroll all participants in our Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions (BCBSGS) travel medical health insurance, formerly called GeoBlue Insurance. The plan includes coverage up to $500,000, has a $0 deductible, covers pre-existing conditions, and includes 24/7 mental health and wellbeing support. It also includes full coverage for emergency medical evacuation, political evacuation, and natural disaster coverage.
